Esplora in Malta officially opened on 26th October 2016. The ambitious EU-funded science centre is set in one of the country’s most fascinating historic sites, the former Royal Navy Military Hospital at Villa Bighi.

I worked with the team behind this new visitor attraction on a visit to Malta in spring 2013. Along with colleagues at KCA London, I was helping share skills to deliver the project’s vision – to cultivate a culture of scientific curiosity and imagination, encouraging visitors to explore, think and imagine.

At Easter in 2016 I had the chance to go to see progress with the building work and meet up with those I’d helped with text-writing for the new displays.

Since then, I’ve continued to work with the team on the interpretation for the galleries. The hands-on indoor spaces and outdoor park will be packed with exhibits, exploring everything from the colossal possibilities of space to the journey of a tiny blood cell through your body.

Esplora’s historic site is now undergoing a transformation in its stunning setting by the sea. The restoration and redevelopment of the buildings to create unique exhibition spaces is in full swing.
